Silo No More: Transforming Team Dynamics Through Collaboration

Silos are perfect for keeping your grains fresh and important conversations stale.

If you feel like your teams or departments are working separately, you're not alone. Silos can slow down progress, create frustration, and make it harder to achieve your organization’s mission. But the good news is you can break them down. The only things that should be in silos are grains!

Silos can occur when departments focus too much on their own goals and lose sight of the bigger picture.

Silos, used on farms to store grain, are great for farming but not for organizations. They occur when departments focus on their own goals and lose sight of the bigger picture. Programs might be running full steam ahead, leaving the Development team in the dark. Or the Communications department is producing copy that is beautiful and compelling but not tied to your organization’s mission. That leaves leaders like you frazzled and wondering how the hell you got here… and how to leave this place post haste.

When teams or departments work in isolation, it leads to communication breakdowns and inefficiencies, slowing progress and creating confusion. Working under those conditions is frustrating and stressful, and it seems like the last thing you should do is stop working to find a solution. And what if that solution doesn’t work? Well, have I got a plan for you!

Strategic Doing offers a flexible framework for collaborative leadership, making it easier for teams to align and work together across departments. Here’s how it works:

🌾 Strategic Doing begins by defining a shared purpose, helping everyone understand how their work contributes to the overall mission of the organization, shifting the focus from "my team" to "our organization."

🌾 Once you have a shared purpose, Strategic Doing breaks it down into smaller, actionable steps with clear ownership. This ensures everyone knows their role, reducing confusion and keeping teams on track.

🌾 Instead of sticking to a rigid plan, Strategic Doing encourages ongoing communication and adaptability. This approach helps prevent teams from falling back into silos and maintains momentum as things evolve.

🌾 As teams work together more frequently and see positive outcomes, trust builds naturally. The “us versus them” mentality fades, turning everyone into true partners working toward a common goal.

When tensions have been running high, there’s a chance that this conversation could be volatile. I find that, in most cases, people really do want to work together—they just don’t know how to start or what to do. This can lead to people fighting to feel heard and desperate for understanding. By remembering what to do if it gets out of hand, you can get everyone back on target and collaborating better than ever.

Breaking down silos is crucial to bringing people together to adapt, make decisions as a team, and stay aligned on the mission. It’s difficult, but you don’t have to do it alone. Having a trusted partner to guide you through this process or facilitate tough conversations will help boost your confidence as a leader and strengthen your team’s trust in you. If that sounds like something you need, I’d love to work beside you. Hop on my calendar here!

How would you rate your teams' ability to collaborate? If you could improve that score in one way, what would that be?
